It’s surprising to me how many people find Living in the O by searching for medical marijuana (or something related to medical marijuana). The truth is that my blog is not the greatest resource for this issue. Sure, I’ve told some interesting stories about DEA raids, Dellums standing up for medical marijuana, and more, but [...]

Maybe I’m just a wimp, since I grew up in LA and have spent my whole life in California, but this winter has been really cold for the East Bay. It seems like the coldest winter we’ve had in my eight years living here, and it’s been one of the wettest too.
Yet somehow I’ve managed [...]

I promised a little while ago I was going to write a post about Mistah Fab, and while I still plan to do something lengthier in the future, I thought I should write something today to celebrate his birthday and mine. Yep, I share not only a birthday but a birth date with my favorite [...]

Last Friday night I was lucky enough to experience Hot Couture, a fire filled fashion show and performance art spectacle at the Crucible in West Oakland. And wow – the night thoroughly surpassed my expectations.
If you’re not familiar with the Crucible, I think NovoScene described this place pretty accurately:
The Crucible is like that one little [...]

Normally, when I write about riding the bus, I’m pretty positive. Honestly, sometimes I sound like a cheerleader for AC Transit, especially for the 1R rapid bus. And my cheeriness about riding the bus is not a front – I really do generally enjoy it. I don’t mind waiting a few minutes (even in the [...]

Last week I reviewed three books about Oakland and promised that a review of my favorite Oakland blogs would be forthcoming. Well here it is.
When I started blogging about Oakland several months ago, I was pleasantly surprised to quickly find that there were at least a dozen others taking on the same task. I was [...]

I recently finished the third book I read last year about Oakland, and it got me thinking about just how much I read about Oakland and how lucky we are that there are so many alternatives available to the Tribune and TV news. So I thought I’d reflect on all that I read about Oakland [...]
