A chance to unwind in Temescal

4 Jun

Now that the elections are over, it’s a good time to unwind and enjoy our Oakland neighborhoods. Tomorrow, the Temescal Street Collective is kicking off a summer of free outdoor movie screenings. They’ll provide the popcorn, but unless you arrive early, you should bring your own chair. Here’s the info for tomorrow’s event:

June 5th
ONE’S DUTY (Maria Jose Calderon) and
LA CORONA (Amanda Micheli and Isabel Vega)
MUSIC VIDEO from COLOMBIA (Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi)

7:00 Pre movie casual ride through Oakland with the folks at
Tip Top Bike Shop
8:00 Opening Band –
Faux Mojo presented by Desa Arts!
Baked goods and Coffee from Bake Sale Betty’s!

One’s Duty (Maria Jose Calderon, TRT 18 min)
A dark comedy set in Chile

La Corona (Amanda Micheli, Isabel Vega, TRT 40 min)
Nominated for an Oscar!

Synopsis: The contestants are murderers, guerrillas, and thieves. The winner will be crowned Queen, but she won’t be invited on a press tour as a role model for young girls. Instead, she will be escorted back to her cell. LA CORONA (The Crown) is a character-driven documentary that follows four inmates competing for the crown in the annual beauty pageant of the Bogota Women’s Prison.

Sounds like a lot of fun to me, and if I’m not still sick, I’ll try to swing by. If you can’t make it tomorrow, don’t worry – the series runs every Thursday through July 17th.

Here’s the info:

Thursday Nights at 8:30 pm
June 5th through July 17th
Bank of the West Building
49th @ Telegraph, Oakland
